When someone you love is sick, you want to do something. You drive them to appointments, sit in waiting rooms, bring meals, and learn words you never wanted to know. And at the end of the day, when there is nothing left to arrange, you pray. Sometimes the words come easily. Sometimes all you can manage is their name.
Their name is a good place to start. Below are healing scriptures to pray over someone you love, each written with a sample name so you can hear what it sounds like to speak God’s promise over a specific person. Replace it with your mom’s name, your husband’s, your friend’s, and pray it out loud.
Why pray healing scriptures over someone by name?
Psalm 107:20 says God “sent His word, and healed them.” Throughout Scripture, healing and God’s spoken word travel together. When you pray a promise over someone, you are not coming up with your own words for a situation that feels too big. You are agreeing with words God already spoke.
Putting their name into the verse keeps your prayer personal and specific. James 5:16 says the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power. Praying a promise by name is one of the most earnest things you can do: you are telling God exactly who you are standing in faith for.
Praying Scripture does not replace wise medical care. God works through doctors, nurses, medicine and rest. These prayers go alongside that care, not instead of it.
8 healing scriptures to pray over a loved one
1. For the one who needs a word from God — Psalm 107:20
He sent out His word and healed Linda, snatching her from the door of death.
God’s word is not passive. It is sent, it travels, and it arrives. Pray this one as a reminder that He is not far from the hospital room.
2. For their body and their soul — 3 John 1:2
I pray that Linda may prosper in every way and that her body may keep well, even as I know her soul keeps well and prospers.
John prayed for his friend’s body and soul in the same sentence. You can too. God cares about the whole person, not only the diagnosis.
3. For every part of what they’re facing — Psalm 103:3
I am the Lord who forgives every one of Robert’s iniquities, Who heals each one of Robert’s diseases.
Each one. Not the easy ones, not most of them. Pray this over the long list of things your loved one is dealing with, one at a time if you need to.
4. For the one who is worn out by pain — Isaiah 53:4–5
Surely the Lord has borne Robert’s weaknesses (sicknesses, griefs, and distresses) and carried his sorrows and pains, yet they ignorantly considered Him stricken, smitten, and afflicted by God. But He was wounded for Robert’s transgressions, He was bruised for Robert’s guilt and iniquities; the chastisement needed to obtain Robert’s peace and well-being was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him, Robert is healed and made whole.
Isaiah names the sicknesses, griefs and pains specifically. Nothing your loved one is carrying was left off the list that Jesus bore.
5. For the finished work of the cross — 1 Peter 2:24
Jesus personally bore Anna’s sins in His own body on the tree as on an altar and offered Himself on it, that Anna might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds and lashes Anna has been healed.
Peter writes it in the past tense. Pray this one as a statement of what Jesus already did, not a request for something He hasn’t decided yet.
6. For when you gather others to pray — James 5:14–15
Is Anna sick? She should call on the church elders (the spiritual guides). And they should pray over her, anointing her with oil in the Lord’s name. And the prayer of faith will save (heal, set free, deliver) Anna, and the Lord will restore her; and if she has committed sins, she will be forgiven.
Healing prayer was never meant to be carried alone. Ask your pastor, your small group or a few trusted friends to pray this with you.
7. For life and testimony — Psalm 118:17
James shall not die; instead, he will live to declare the works and recount the illustrious acts of the Lord.
This is a verse of purpose. Pray that your loved one will one day tell the story of what God did through this season.
8. For long life — Psalm 91:16
With long life will I satisfy James and show him My salvation.
Psalm 91 is a whole chapter of protection, and it ends with this promise. Read the chapter over them, then close with this verse by name.
2 scriptures for the one who is praying
If you are the caregiver, you are carrying a lot too. These promises are for you.
9. When you are running on empty — Psalm 28:7
The Lord is Sarah’s strength and Sarah’s shield; Sarah’s heart trusts in Him, and she is helped; therefore her heart greatly rejoices, and with her song she will praise Him.
Strength and shield: one to keep you going, one to protect you while you do. You are allowed to receive help, too.
10. When you feel like you’re slipping — Psalm 94:18
When Sarah said, “My foot slips,” God’s mercy held her up.
The psalmist didn’t pretend to be steady. He said it out loud, and God’s mercy caught him. You can be honest about how hard this is.
How to pray these every day
- Choose one or two. You don’t need all ten at once. Pick the promise that fits today and pray it morning and night.
- Say their name out loud. If you can, pray at their bedside or on the phone with them. Hearing their name in God’s promise can encourage them too.
- Write it where you’ll see it. A sticky note on the dashboard or bathroom mirror keeps the promise in front of you between appointments.
- Invite others in. Share one verse with your church or family group and ask them to pray it by name this week.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most powerful healing scripture?
Many believers turn to Isaiah 53:5, 1 Peter 2:24, Psalm 103:3 and Psalm 107:20. The most powerful one for you is the promise you will actually return to and pray consistently.
Can I pray healing scriptures over someone who is not a believer?
Yes. You can pray God’s promises over anyone you love. Your faith is not limited by theirs, and your prayers can be part of how they come to know Him.
Is it okay to put someone’s name in a Bible verse?
Yes, as long as the meaning of the verse isn’t changed and you keep the reference. Personalizing a promise is a devotional practice that helps you pray specifically for the person God put on your heart.
Should we still see a doctor if we’re praying for healing?
Yes. Praying Scripture and receiving medical care work together. Keep following your medical team’s guidance while you stand in faith.
